  • Doug Baldwin
Doug Baldwin is a commercial and fine art photographer. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, he opened a commercial photography company. Since then he has created photography, designed websites, produced videos and created graphic design for a wide range of clients from individual glass artists to Fortune 500 corporations.

Doug has taken up flameworking after classes with Dolly Ahles and Laurie Nessel at the Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, Arizona and at Arrow Springs in California. His love for all things glass has widened to include glass fusing, slumping, sand carving, kiln work, neon and plasma sculptures. Many glass and bead artists would like to have nice photos of their finished pieces, but don’t have the technical expertise to accomplish good photos themselves. Doug has recognized this need and has designed several classes that will teach everyone the secrets of good lighting and camera settings to achieve professional results easily.

You'll learn specific techniques of lighting glass and how to build your own simple lighting setups using inexpensive materials found at your local big-box store. See how to utilize the camera you already own to successfully shoot glass objects. Photography class students should plan to bring at least 6 pieces of their glass art and camera. In the Photoshop class students will learn the tools and techniques to create color accurate image files ready for use on a website, in magazine articles, books and portfolios. Plus, how to purchase Photoshop at less than the full retail price. Photoshop class students may bring a laptop to follow along in Photoshop.

If you don't have Photoshop installed, a 30 day free trial version will be available during the class. You'll leave the class empowered to create photos as beautiful as the glass art you're photographing. Doug’s teaching experience includes photography at Art Center College of Design, sold out photography and Photoshop classes at the Bead & Button Expo and at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona.

  • Guest Speaker Dan Jenkins
When Dan Jenkins retired he did not originally intend to make tools and molds for glass artists. However his wife and friends who work in fused glass were constantly calling on the skills he developed during 30 years as a marine engineer in the Canadian Navy to produce items that were needed but unavailable. He began his career on steam driven ships for which it was impossible to get parts. The engineers had to fabricate their own parts out of whatever was available to them.

Dan has drawn on his knowledge of woodworking, metalworking, design, engineering and making something out of nothing. He discovered that he enjoys the challenge of designing new tools that are practical, economical and easy to use. Dan has always enjoyed teaching and spent much of his time in the navy as an instructor both at sea and onshore. Dan currently lives in Victoria B.C. with is wife, two cats and two dogs.

  • Cheryl Frech
Glass is my passion but it has been a long road to get here. Early in life, I was pushed toward a scientific career and my artistic side took a back seat. During college I took a stained glass class. I was fascinated by the ability to cut colorful shapes and form it together into something that was mine.

My next stop was counted cross-stitch. During my search for more inspiration I happened upon a quilt store and I was hooked. For over a decade I created my designs and quilts. One day I saw a class for wire wrapping in the quilt store, and on a whim, took it. It was addicting! I love the form and curves. I could not find a class in Chicago, but I did find Deb Crowley on the web and went to Oregon for eight days of fusing classes. That was the beginning.

Since then I have spent countless hours creating and making jewelry as well as larger fused pieces (bowls, platters, plates, panels). Today, I love to incorporate the use of Dichroic into my pieces whenever possible. My style is still developing but, in general, my larger pieces I would consider whimsical original patterns of nature and animals with a touch of my quilting background thrown in. I love glass and sharing what I know.

  • Guest Speaker Gail Jenkins
Gail Jenkins is a glass artisan with eight years experience in kiln formed glass. Her journey began when she had a beautiful stained glass window made for her home.

This inspired her to take a course in stained glass, later moving on to kiln formed glass. Jewelry is one of her favorite mediums as it allows the use of many techniques to achieve varied and beautiful results.

She loves to teach and had many years of instructing experience before her discovery of glass art, teaching advanced first aid to Coast Guard, firefighters, miners etc. She has found that this experience in teaching adult learners translates well into any teaching situation. Gail shares her home with her husband Dan, who makes tools for glass artists, two dogs and two cats.

His engineering background created the perfect basis to experiment in this small medium. He has been teaching for 8 years. Many of the processes he uses and teaches were developed in his studio. He shares these techniques freely through class and on line tutorials. You can see his work and his tutorials at www.kaiserglass.com. He and his wife Sharon work out of their home studio.

  • Stacey King
Glass has held my fascination for as long as I can remember. It’s ability to capture light and shadow. It’s permanence of shape, unless altered by force or fire, have drawn me in since childhood. I have been working in different mediums all my life: paint, metalwork, casting, mold making, encaustics, and jewelry in all forms. I keep coming back to glass. I began working with stained glass in 1980.

In 1990 I started work in a professional art glass studio. It was here that my focus moved to kiln formed glass and lampworking. I also discovered a passion for teaching. I have been teaching kiln formed glass since 1993, and lampworked glass since 1996. I have studied various kiln techniques with Patty Gray, Kathleen Sheard, Richard LaLonde, Phil Teefy, and Peter Mc- Grain.

I am currently the Flame and Kiln Coordinator for The Schack in Everett Washington. I love walking into local galleries and seeing my former students work on display. They’ve moved in different and amazing directions and it gives me joy to know that I had a part in getting them started.

  • Arlene Mornick
For me the simple elements of glass, light and heat when fused together create a special energy. That energy and spirit speak to me of passion and beauty, which inspire me to create colorful pieces of glass and silver art.

I am a fused glass and metal clay artist. In my work, I have created a wonderful partnership between those two mediums. Many years ago I realized that there was a creative side to me and it was simply bursting at the seams. It wasn’t until a friend took me to a beginning jewelry making class that the creative juices started to flow.

But creating jewelry with machine made pieces was not enough. I wanted to be able to create the beads and stones myself. I started by taking a glass lampworking class and started creating my own glass beads.

Next I fell in love with glass fusing started working on all size and shape pieces of glass art. When I went to an introductory Art Clay class, I realized there was a perfect marriage here. Art Clay became a wonderful inspiration for me and has enhanced my creativity as a fused glass artist and metal smith. I am currently a Master Instructor with Art Clay Silver and a certifi ed instructor with PMC.

I teach Metal Clay classes in the San Francisco bay area and throughout the country.

Debbie took a beginning stained glass class in 1986 and fell in love. She opened a retail stained glass store, Inspirations, in 1993 and has taught all levels of foil, lead, sandblasting and fusing over the years. Her love of glass has led to the fabrication of many commissioned windows, both residential and commercial, throughout the Northwest. When fusing became “hot” Debbie bought a kiln and dove in.

Quickly bored with fused bowls and plates, Debbie started experimenting with making fused elements to incorporate into her stained glass, as well as playing with different infusions to add interest.

Roz started doing glass in 2002 with a ceramic kiln and old bottles - she was addicted. Within a year she had several kilns and was on the hunt for all the fused glas information she could find.

Not having information and proper materials made her experiment with things that shouldn't be done, some worked and some didn't. Her addiction multiplied. In 2007 she found Glass Craft and Bead Expo and started taking classes all over North America. In 2010 she entered the Amateur fused glass Gallery of Excellence in Las Vegas and won first place with one platter and People's choice with the other. This gave her the confi dence to start teaching and selling her platters.

Since then she has instructed over 200 students and continued to experiment with fused glass. Some of her best techniques have come from these experiments. She has a 1000 sq. ft. studio, 10 kilns and works on glass full time, and loves it.

Janine Stillman began exploring glass as a graduate student in college over 25 years ago. As a much needed creative diversion from the rigors of a Master’s Degree program, glass became one of her favorite artistic outlets.

While raising her family, she explored fiber art, particularly enamored with the process of fabric marbleizing and the beautiful designs that can be created with the fluid motion of color. Translating these patterns into glass has been her journey to push the limits of warm glass to recreate patterns and images reminiscent of old book bindings or representative of images from nature.

Janine has studied under many very skilled and talented artists, many of whom are teaching at this event. After studying under Patty Gray for many years, she has developed techniques in combing and glass manipulation that have earned her recognition throughout the glass community for taking this art form to new levels.

  • Margaret Zinser
Margaret has been a lampworker since 2001. She has been making beads and teaching beadmaking full time since the start of 2005, after finishing her Master's in Entomology in 2004.

Her scientific background has contributed to her glass work by providing inspiration, a willingness to experiment, and a drive for technical development. Most of Margaret's beads are studies in color and texture in glass, are rarely representational (a likely deviation from her undergraduate work in biological illustration), but often conjure a specifi c image for the viewer. The high contract and organic "cells" in her Biologicals series are reminiscent of reptilian skin or cells viewed under a microscope.

The high swirling colors in her Meteorologicals series are suggestive of weather maps and moving clouds. For training in lampwork, Margaret has taken workshops with Brownen Heilman, Lucio Bubacco, Bandhu Dunham, and Shane Fero. Margaret's studio is in her home in Tucson, Arizona.
